1 Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
1 내 형제들아 너희는 선생된 우리가 더 큰 심판을 받을 줄 알고 선생이 많이 되지 말라
1. 我的弟兄們，不要多人作師傅，因爲曉得我們要受更重的判斷。
2 We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.
2 우리가 다 실수가 많으니 만일 말에 실수가 없는 자라면 곧 온전한 사람이라 능히 온 몸도 굴레 씌우리라
2. 原來我們在許多事上都有過失；若有人在話語上沒有過失，他就是完全人，也能勒住自己的全身。
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.
3 우리가 말들의 입에 재갈 물리는 것은 우리에게 순종하게 하려고 그 온 몸을 제어하는 것이라
3. 我們若把嚼環放在馬嘴裏，叫他順服，就能調動他的全身。
4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
4 또 배를 보라 그렇게 크고 광풍에 밀려가는 것들을 지극히 작은 키로써 사공의 뜻대로 운행하나니
4. 看哪，船隻雖然甚大，又被大風催逼，只用小小的舵，就隨著掌舵的意思轉動。
5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
5 이와 같이 혀도 작은 지체로되 큰 것을 자랑하도다 보라 얼마나 작은 불이 얼마나 많은 나무를 태우는가
5. 這樣，舌頭在百體裏也是最小的，卻能說大話。看哪，最小的火能點著最大的樹林。
6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
6 혀는 곧 불이요 불의의 세계라 혀는 우리 지체 중에서 온 몸을 더럽히고 삶의 수레바퀴를 불사르나니 그 사르는 것이 지옥 불에서 나느니라
6. 舌頭就是火，在我們百體中，舌頭是個罪惡的世界，能汚穢全身，也能把生命的輪子點起來，並且是從地獄裏點的。
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man,
7 여러 종류의 짐승과 새며 벌레와 바다의 생물은 다 사람이 길들일 수 있고 길들여 왔거니와
7. 各類的走獸，飛禽，昆蟲，水族，本來都可以制伏，也已經被人制伏了；
8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
8 혀는 능히 길들일 사람이 없나니 쉬지 아니하는 악이요 죽이는 독이 가득한 것이라
8. 惟獨舌頭沒有人能制伏，是不止息的惡物，滿了害死人的毒氣。
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness.
9 이것으로 우리가 주 아버지를 찬송하고 또 이것으로 하나님의 형상대로 지음을 받은 사람을 저주하나니
9. 我們用舌頭頌讚那爲主、爲父的，又用舌頭咒詛那照著神形像被造的人；
10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.
10 한 입으로 찬송과 저주가 나는도다 내 형제들아 이것이 마땅하지 아니하니라
10. 頌讚和咒詛從一個口裏出來！我的弟兄們，這是不應當的！
11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
11 샘이 한 구멍으로 어찌 단 물과 쓴 물을 내겠느냐
11. 泉源從一個眼裏能發出甛苦兩樣的水麽？
12 My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
12 내 형제들아 어찌 무화과 나무가 감람 열매를, 포도 나무가 무화과를 맺겠느냐 이와 같이 짠 물이 단 물을 내지 못하느니라
12. 我的弟兄們，無花果樹能生橄欖麽？葡萄樹能結無花果麽？鹹水裏也不能發出甛水來。
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
13 너희 중에 지혜와 총명이 있는 자가 누구냐 그는 선행으로 말미암아 지혜의 온유함으로 그 행함을 보일지니라
13. 你們中間誰是有智慧有見識的呢？他就當在智慧的溫柔上顯出他的善行來。
14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.
14 그러나 너희 마음 속에 독한 시기와 다툼이 있으면 자랑하지 말라 진리를 거슬러 거짓말하지 말라
14. 你們心裏若懷著苦毒的嫉妒和分爭，就不可自誇，也不可說謊話抵擋眞道。
15 Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.
15 이러한 지혜는 위로부터 내려온 것이 아니요 땅 위의 것이요 정욕의 것이요 귀신의 것이니
15. 這樣的智慧不是從上頭來的，乃是屬地的，屬情慾的，屬鬼魔的。
16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
16 시기와 다툼이 있는 곳에는 혼란과 모든 악한 일이 있음이라
16. 在何處有嫉妒、分爭，就在何處有擾亂和各樣的壞事。
17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
17 오직 위로부터 난 지혜는 첫째 성결하고 다음에 화평하고 관용하고 양순하며 긍휼과 선한 열매가 가득하고 편견과 거짓이 없나니
17. 惟獨從上頭來的智慧，先是淸潔，後是和平，溫良柔順，滿有憐憫，多結善果，沒有偏見，沒有假冒。
18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.
18 화평하게 하는 자들은 화평으로 심어 의의 열매를 거두느니라
18. 並且使人和平的，是用和平所栽種的義果。
